3-D
Websites

Overview
  • What is a “3-D” Website?
  • Pros and Cons
  • 3-D Sites in Action

3
So what is a 3-D website and why do I need one?
  • Dynamic
  • Date-sensitive
  • Data-driven
4
Dynamic
  • Pages are generated by server in response to specific user action.
  • Conditional content and formatting based on variables such as user identity (e.g. member/non-member, registered or not yet registered), date, browser type, etc.
  • Allows for options like variable menus, user preferences, customizable pages and “members only” content
5
Data-driven
  • Content for most pages resides in a database
  • Retrieved by server based on user action and other parameters (such as date, browser, etc.) specified in programming
  • Content is formatted according to controls specified in programming and sent to user as generated HTML page
  • Allows for full-text searching
  • On-line registration or maintenance instantly updates database – no need to upload or download
6
Date-sensitive
  • Date tagging prevents the display of out of date content
  • Press releases, bulletins, etc. automatically sorted by date
  • Conditional code displays content based on specified start and end date for items like event calendars, schedules, special promotions, etc.
  • “What’s new” pages dynamically generated
7
Why do I need a
3-D Website?
  • Easy for non-programmers to maintain
  • Easy to set and maintain consistent look and feel
  • Easy maintenance gets done more often: a useful, up to date site means more repeat traffic
  • Dynamic, date-sensitive or randomly selected content keeps your site looking fresh
  • On-line, searchable content, product, customer or membership databases keep them coming back
8
Pros and Cons
  • Easy maintenance: No special skills required
  • Consistent “look and feel”
  • Easier to distribute maintenance tasks
  • Easier to keep up to date
  • Useful to your visitors
  • Higher front end costs
  • Don’t try this at home (You’ll probably need a professional)
  • Redesigning the site may be more costly, but won’t need doing as often

This presentation has just barely scratched the surface…
  • But hopefully we’ve at least given you a glimpse of what 3-D web sites can mean for you and your organization.
  • And you’ll probably be surprised at how affordable they can be
